People counter ROI calculator
To break even, you need
7.8
extra transactions a month, a conversion lift of 0.19 points (22.0% → 22.19%).
- Or staff hours saved
- 2.2/week
- 9.7 a month
- Dor cost per month
- $175.00
- $150 + $300 ÷ 12 months
Your scenario: +1.0 pts
+$725/month net
$900 a month in extra gross profit against $175.00 of cost. Hardware pays back in about 0.4 months.
Assumption-based, not a promise. A counter doesn’t lift conversion by itself; the gains come from what you change once you can see traffic. Use conservative numbers.
What to do next
- Sense-check the hurdle: 7.8 extra sales a month is about 0.3 a day, or one more buyer every 514 visitors.
- Not sure of your visitor count? Run a free one-hour tally at the door first, then come back with a real number.

Monthly cost = (hardware + subscription × months) ÷ months($300 + $150 × 12) ÷ 12 = $175.00Gross profit per transaction = average transaction × gross margin$45.00 × 50% = $22.50Extra transactions needed = monthly cost ÷ gross profit per transaction$175.00 ÷ $22.50 = 7.8Conversion lift needed = extra transactions ÷ visitors × 1007.8 ÷ 4,000 × 100 = 0.194 ptsHours saved needed = monthly cost ÷ wage ÷ (52 ÷ 12)$175.00 ÷ $18.00 ÷ 4.33 = 2.24 h/weekScenario gain = visitors × lift × gross profit per transaction + hours saved × 4.33 × wage= $900.00/month
Worked example.
A store with 4,000 visitors a month, 22% conversion, a $45 average transaction and a 50% gross margin, on Dor’s monthly plan over 12 months.
- Cost: ($300 + $150 × 12) ÷ 12 = $175 a month.
- Each extra sale earns $45 × 50% = $22.50 of gross profit, so the counter needs 7.8 extra transactions a month.
- Out of 4,000 visitors that’s a lift of 0.19 points, from 22% to about 22.2%.
- Or, at $18 an hour, about 2.2 staff hours a week moved out of hours that don’t need them.
Whether you get there depends on what you do with the data. The usual first wins are moving staff into the busiest hours and finding the hours where lots of people walk in and few buy.
Where the return usually comes from.
- Staffing to traffic. Fewer hours in quiet periods, more cover in busy ones.
- Conversion fixes. High-traffic, low-conversion hours point to queues, missing stock or too few people on the floor.
- Marketing you can measure. A promotion or window change either brought more people in or it didn’t.
- Better leases and forecasts. Real traffic history for rent negotiations and buying plans.
Dor’s price here is from its pricing page: $150 per location per month, or $135 a month billed annually, plus $300 one-time hardware, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Questions retailers ask.
Is a people counter worth it for a small store?
It is if the decisions it changes are worth more than it costs. At Dor’s $150 a month plus $300 hardware, a store with a $45 average sale and 50% margin needs about 8 extra transactions a month, or a couple of better-placed staff hours a week.
How much does Dor cost?
Dor lists $150 per location per month, or $135 per month billed annually, plus a one-time $300 hardware cost. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee and no free trial.
Why does the calculator use gross margin, not sales?
Because an extra sale only adds its gross profit to your bottom line. The cost of the goods you sold still has to be paid.
Will a counter increase my conversion rate?
Not on its own. It shows you where conversion is weak and whether changes work. The lift comes from acting on that: staffing, layout, stock and service.
How do I estimate visitors if I’ve never counted?
Run a short manual count with the free tally counter on a few representative hours, then scale up. Or divide transactions by a conservative conversion rate for your category.
Test the assumptions on your own door.
Dor offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can see your real traffic and conversion before deciding it’s worth it.
